The Hawks fall to 17th in the league table after losing 2-1 to Bishop’s Stortford in Essex yesterday. The hosts struck twice in the dying minutes of the game to cancel out Christian Nanetti’s 33rd minute lead, leaving the Hawks now with just five points from their first five games.
The visitors’ misfortune started even before kick off when goalkeeper Scott Bevan injured himself during the warm up, giving Academy graduate Charlie Searle his first senior start for the side. Jake Newton and Dennis Oli were also unfit to play.
For much of the game it looked like the Hawks would shrug off any difficulties, dominating the latter part of the first half after a slow start. It was Nanetti’s dancing runs that saw the side go ahead when a swift counter attack ended with a shot from outside the box that beat keeper Joe Wright.
The Hawks continued to push after the break and Perry Ryan hit the post, but a calamitous finale followed that saw the Blues take the points. Sean Francis sent home Matt Johnson’s free kick with a header two minutes from time, and as seven minutes of injury time unfolded the hosts went all out to find a winner and did when Johnson sent another ball deep into the box, this time for George Sykes to turn in.
