The Hawks suffered a third pre-season defeat yesterday, this time at the hands of former rivals and now League Two side Newport County. The history between the sides stretches as far back as October 1999 when goals from James Taylor and Paul Wood helped the Hawks to a 3-3 draw in Wales.

This time however County took firm control of the game and Lee Minshull’s headed goal in the 34th minute divided the sides at half time. Hawks’ keeper Scott Bevan then handed the visitors a second goal early in the second half when he lost hold of a long ball into the box which went in before he could recover it. David Pipe made it three in the 81st minute when he cracked home a tremendous and unstoppable drive from midfield.
