Report from the Portsmouth Sports Mail used with kind permission.

The Hawks proved too strong for relegation haunted Worcester City as they cruised to a 2-0 win at St George’s Lane. Goals in each half from Gary MacDonald and Paul Hinshelwood saw the visitors extend their unbeaten run to seven games.

The Hawks had skipper Ian Simpemba back in the starting line-up having missed two games through illness, with Jay Gasson dropping to the substitutes’ bench.

In a positive opening Hawks full-back Jake Newton went past two defenders down the right and crossed to the far post. Wes Fogden headed the ball back into the danger area where defender Wayne Daniel turned the ball against his own upright.

The visitors continued to make the early running and from another Newton cross Fogden almost linked with Manny Williams inside the area.

Jon McDonald floated a free kick into the Worcester area as the Hawks remained on top but this time it was easily claimed by goalkeeper Jake Meredith.

After 10 minutes Graham Ward curled in a free kick for City which Rob Elvins headed wide of the target.

Williams cleverly worked his way to the byline but there was no one to get on the end of his chipped ball across the face of goal.

A foul by Ian Selley on Gary Walker gave City a free-kick in a dangerous place just outside the area. But Ward lined his effort up only to curl it harmlessly over the bar.

Neither side had created a single clear cut chance in the opening 20 minutes, though the Hawks had claimed most of the possession.

City gradually began to work their way into the game and Jack Durrant had a fierce drive blocked by Simpemba on the edge of the area.

On 29 minutes the visitors had a let off when Alfie Carter’s first time ball inside the defence put Elvins clear in the area. The striker drew Aaron Howe only to see his low shot thumped back out off the bottom of the post.

Soon afterwards the Hawks made the most of that escape by taking the lead.

A foul on Fogden gave him a free kick in an excellent position a few yards outside the area. Ian Selley’s curled effort was sneaking in just under the crossbar when Meredith diverted it over the bar.

From the corner however, the keeper missed the ball and MACDONALD turned it in via the underside of the crossbar.

Carter got into a dangerous position as Worcester looked to hit back, but Howe easily collected his ball in the six yard area.

On the stroke of half time Mustafa Tiryaki brought a low save from Meredith from inside the area.

The Hawks maintained their good tempo at the start of the second period with Tiryaki forcing a good save from Meredith with a fiercely struck snap shot from inside the area.

When the home side did manage to attack, the visitors looked well organised and solid at the back.

Williams was ploughing a lone furrow up front with Tiryaki playing in a deeper role behind.

The little striker, who scored a hat-trick against the same opponents a fortnight ago, looked dangerous as Selley fed him a series of good through balls. The visitors took a firmer grip on the game in the 69th minute with a second goal.

McDonald had space on the left and his driven cross was turned over the line from close range by HINSHELWOOD

Howe was easily able to save Shabir Khan’s sliced effort at his near post.

Tiryaki showed his defensive qualities when he got up to head away from Carter at the far post.
