The Hawks came from behind at a freezing Westleigh Park tonight to over turn visitors Bishop’s Stortford 2-1; chalking up their fourth consecutive win in the process.

When Scott Shulton put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot after keeper Aaron Howe collided with Matt Jones it looked as though the home side’s winning streak was over, but a committed second half display turned the game on its head.

Manny Williams struck first in the 53rd minute when he smashed home the rebound after Blues keeper Deniz Mehmet pushed away Mustafa Tiryaki’s header, and then Steve Walker concluded a brilliant sweeping move from the Hawks nine minutes later when he buried Williams’s delicate knock back from the line.

A single enforced change to the starting line up meant that recently recovered Jay Gasson replaced the suspended Jon McDonald at left back.

Wes Fogden’s early shot tangled in Ben Nunn’s legs as the Hawks took time to find their feet in another slow opening. Ian Selley then sliced a corner across the box only to see it cleared off the line by Matt Jones.

Paul Hinshelwood’s ball wide to Steven Walker set up another shot that Alex Bentley hacked away before it could trouble keeper Deniz Mehmet. Two corners followed as the home side began to find their feet, and Mustafa Tiryaki wasted a perfect chance when his first touch let him down in receipt of a pass after Williams broke away on the left.

As had been the case on Saturday, it took a goal to really fire the game into life, but unlike the encounter with Worcester, it was the visitors who struck first from the spot after Hawks keeper Aaron Howe clattered into Jones while trying to reach the ball in the air.

SHULTON took a confident penalty low to Howe’s right and although the keeper guessed right, couldn’t stop it going in off his hand.

Hinshelwood sent a looping shot at Mehmet that the keeper claimed above his head, but the Hawks came closer to restoring the balance when a long free kick was knocked down in the box and Gasson tried a low shot through legs from 18 yards that came back off the inside of the post to a grateful Mehmet.

An improved second half performance saw the Hawks more confident in the final third and seven minutes in, Selley sent a corner high over the box for Tiryaki to angle a header back toward the line. Mehmet dived to push the ball away one handed, but could do nothing about the predatory WILLIAMS who pounced on the rebound to poke it into the side of the net.

Fogden snatched a lucky ball in midfield and burst up the left, crossing just as Williams arrived in the box. The striker took the ball on past Mehmet, but lost it trying to turn a shot back as it raced out of play.

The home side then took the lead in spectacular fashion when Williams took on a free kick sent from the back by Howe and raced for the line with red shirts trailing him. His superb back heel chipped the ball back perfectly for WALKER to sweep it across Mehmet and into the far side of the net in one fluid movement.

From this point, a crestfallen Blues side staring at their fourth consecutive defeat made way for the ascendant Hawks, who dominated the final half hour of the game.

Joe Tabiri, on for Hinshelwood in the 58th minute sent a rasping drive wide of the post, and Williams tipped the ball up for Fogden to try with a shot that also flew wide. Stortford’s last hurrah came when Max Lette-Jallow found space to fire a low shot through the box after the Hawks took too long to deal with a free kick, but Howe got down to stop it.

In injury time the hosts almost added a third when substitute Steve Hutchings volleyed the ball into Williams’s path as he ran into the box. Mehmet came forward to smother Williams’s shot but the striker took the ball past him before squaring it for Hutchings to hammer a shot straight at goal that Bentley kicked off the line.
