The Hawks took their second Blue Square Premier scalp in five days with a 1-0 victory against League Champions Lewes at the Dripping Pan this afternoon. Former Rooks defender Ian Simpemba scored the winner in the 66th minute when he blocked sub keeper Dean Ruddy’s attempted clearance of a Gary Holloway corner, sending the ball back past the hapless keeper.

The goal came during the only real period of pressure for either side, three consecutive corners creating a moment of excitement in an otherwise quiet game; the Hawks barely needing to break into a trot to beat the side that topped the Blue Square South last season.

Rocky Baptiste’s low drive after being set up by Gary Holloway was the first real chance for either side, coming as it did 25 minutes into the first half. Seven minutes later the pair combined again, but trying to get the ball onto his right foot, Baptiste lost it to defender Dany Collip.

Kevin Scriven did well to tip Anthony Barness’s long range effort over the bar in the closing minutes of the half, and Chris Breach then wasted a chance to put the hosts in front when he sliced the resulting corner over the bar.

Shortly after the break James Fraser fired high from a free kick, but it was the five minute period of pressure which followed that gave the Hawks the lead. Barness fouled Luke Nightingale just outside the Rooks’ area, and Scott Taylor head out Brett Poate’s free kick for Craig Richards to clear again from the corner.

Two more corners followed, the first cleared behind again by Seb Wallis-Tayler, but the third struck home when keeper Ruddy managed only to punch Holloway’s inswinging ball into SIMPEMBA, who chested it back into the net.

After the game, manager Shaun Gale was once again happy with a solid performance from his side,

“It was a decent workout.” He said.

“We thought it would be a tough game but I’m pleased we looked solid and strong throughout. I thought we did well today. We created more chances again, which is especially good away from home, and the really pleasing thing is that it was another clean sheet. With clean sheets you’ve got a chance of winning games.

On the subject of the ongoing question of striker Rocky Baptiste’s future he added, “We’re still talking. Rocky wants to be here and I’d like him to be here. He’s done well again today but he looked tired. He hasn’t played much recently so we took him off, but for the first half I thought he played very well. He got a result in the week and he was unlucky not to score again today.”
