|Carl started his career with Kingstonian, progressing from their academy to the reserve side, before moving to Mullingar Town in the Irish Eircom under-21 league in 2002 for a season. In July 2003 he signed a three-month contract at Brighton, having been scouted in Ireland, but went on loan to Crawley Town that August, scoring seven goals for the Sussex side (including a hat-trick at Worcester City) during the first three months of their Southern League championship season.
Although offered a contract with Crawley, Carl moved on to Cambridge City in February 2004, and then Fisher Athletic before signing with Newport County in July 2004. His tenure in Wales was short lived though, and Carl transferred to Brackley Town in early 2005 after a short stint in January at Dulwich Hamlet. From there he moved to Carshalton for the start of the 2005/06 campaign and has been a regular starter for the Robins until his move to the Hawks in December 2005.
