|Powell started his career at Sheffield Wednesday before moving to Derry City to play football in the Irish League. On returning to England he played with Worksop Town, Denaby United and Stocksbridge Park Steels before joining Unibond First Division side North Ferriby United in September 2001. During the 2003/04 season with Central Midlands Supreme league side Retford United, Powell scored an unprecedented 72 goals, including six hat-tricks, that helped the club to a league and cup treble.
From there he moved to Grays Athletic in July 2004 and scored 14 goals from 10 starting and 23 substitute appearances in all competitions last season while the side pushed for promotion to the Conference National. The last goal he scored for the club was in fact against the Hawks, coming in the 87th minute of the 04/05 season finale match. While at Grays, Powell spent time on loan at Weymouth in April 2005, making a handful of appearances and scoring 3 goals. He was released by Grays in May and joined Stafford Rangers over the summer.
