|Gavin signed for the Hawks from Wycombe Wanderers in March 2004. Still only 23 years of age he started life at Walton and Hersham in 1997 before moving to Kingstonian in 1998. He made 15 appearances for the then Conference side under the tutelage of Hawks manager Dave Leworthy, before making a dream move to West Ham in a £150,000 deal just three months later.
Despite a three year spell with the Hammers he made just one substitute appearance in the Premier League and endured short loans at Leyton Orient, Exeter City and Kingstonian again before joining Wycombe Wanderers in August 2001. In his time with the Chairboys he scored ten goals and made 50 appearances in all. In December 2003 he spent a month on loan with Crawley Town, and scored against the Hawks in the Boxing Day match between the sides.
Gavin may only have made nine appearances for the Hawks at the end of last season, but his arrival triggered a six match unbeaten run that saw confidence return to a beaten side and put them back on the road to the Conference.
