|Widely regarded as a goalkeeper of outstanding ability, Gareth began life as a youth player at Sutton United before moving into the professional game at Tottenham Hotspur. From there he went on to play for Torquay United, where he scored the deciding penalty in the playoff final against Blackpool in 1991 that saw the Gulls promoted to the old Division three.
Gareth also has league experience with Swindon, Leyton Orient and South African side Hellenic. He moved into the non-league in 1996 at the age of 26 to play for St Albans City, and stayed a season before moving back to his roots at Sutton, where he enjoyed promotion to the Conference in 1999. As their first choice keeper for three seasons he made 148 appearances in all before moving to Aldershot in July 2001.
In his first season with the Shots he appeared 54 times, but after injury and the arrival of Nikki Bull in 2002 his appearances became infrequent. Looking for regular first team football again he left the Shots in May 2003, and after a flurry of speculation and interest from clubs including Farnborough Town signed for the Hawks on July 7th 2003. In his first three seasons with the Hawks he made 117 appearances, quickly installing himself as an essential member of the team. Last season he became the club’s goal keeping coach and while he is still fit and able to perform in goal, his role is now largely seen as being in a coaching capacity.
