The Hawks came off worse in a real clash of the titans struggle on Thursday night against Dover Athletic as they took the lead, lost it, drew level from 3-1 down and then ultimately lost 4-3 at Westleigh Park.
Scott Donnellyís opener was a clever low shot flicked through the box from a Nic Ciardini free kick, and initially it looked as though the Hawks were on course for an impressive win against the play-off hopefuls.
But three Dover goals in the space of 16 minutes at the start of the second half, with a fourth disallowed by the assistantís flag, saw the hosts on the ropes by the 64th minute.
Dan Strugnell gave the Hawks hope in the 75th when he slammed a shot in off the underside of the bar in the wake of a close range free kick given to the Hawks for a back pass, and the Hawks drew level in the 81st minute when Nic Ciardiniís low shot skidded home in the wet.
The Whites though regained their lead straight from the restart when Moses Ademola cut the ball in from the left of the box for substitute Liam Bellamy to thump home.
