Spot on Stewart you've got everything covered.

It was a good meeting with Hants FA and other managers today, some very useful points came out.

Cheers Rob, but I've remembered one other thing - Hants FA recommend that the maximum match fee that should be charged is £3.00 per player.

Onwards and upwards - details of next Wednesday's frolic at Brighton, and we have had confirmation of the arrangements:

Confirmed teams - Havant & Waterlooville Blue, Havant & Waterlooville Pink, Strood, Lancing Wanderers, Worthing. Play starts at 11.00am.

Format will be a round robin tournament - 5 rounds with each team playing each other once, and having one round where they are not playing. We will then do a 1st v 2nd final and 4th v 3rd playoff. No trophies I'm afraid, but just a great opportunity to play at a professional facility.

Game format / pitch size is 6 a side, but teams can bring up to 12 players. Age limit is 50 and over, in line with pretty much all WF programmes.

Each game is 10 minutes straight through with a 5 minute water/ rest break after each game, rolling subs.
The pitch is 3G (outside), so trainers / astroturf / moulds all fine, no metal studs please.
Balls will be size 5 outside footballs. Over head height is fine, no throw ins - balls to be passed in with feet. GK's area will be marked, GK can come out (with feet), and players can go into the GK's area.
Strictly no running, either on or off the ball. Fouls or running to be penalised with a direct free kick. Referees decision final!

Players allowed unlimited touches.

Location:

American Express Elite Football Performance Centre
Mash Barn Lane
Lancing
BN15 9EE

The postcode is not exact as it's such a brand new facility, but if you drive along Mash Barn Lane you can't miss it. Security is very tight around the complex, so B&HAFC will need a full list of attendees (players / friends / supporters etc), by Monday 11th May please. On arrival at the security booth your name will be ticked off the list, and you will be directed towards the community pitch. Organiser Chris Day or one of their coaches will hopefully be in the car park to greet you.

The complex is a strict no smoking site, so please pass this message on. Also anywhere other than the community pitch is off limits. There are toilets next to the pitch, but no changing rooms at present. There are no shops or vending machines accessible on site, so please bring drinks / food etc as needed.

Folks, I would suggest that we meet at West Leigh Park at 9:15 Wednesday morning (13th) for the Brighton trip. We can then car-share, we haven't had time to organize a coach! We should be OK to get there in 4 cars, I'm OK to take three passengers.

See you all at Eastleigh Hub on Sunday!!! :D

Match report from Sunday 10th May vs Eastleigh Hub.

Sunday afternoon, and we were given the choice of getting changed in Eastleigh either in a public toilet (strange looks from the punters!) or in a car park (strange looks from the punters!). Having been given a choice of strips to wear, we went with our new yellow “Skrill South” shirts with our usual navy shorts and white socks. There will also be a red strip to choose from soon, if the Special One can persuade Sir Richie to do the numbers and badges. Three games were played, in line with the options given by the Hants FA: 2-touch, 3-touch, and unlimited touch. Each was 20 minutes, 10 each way.

Matt the Miss led the warm-up, giving our adoring audience a final pre-match thrill of the Ministry of Silly Walks à la Tiller Girls before we settled into the 2-touch game. We took the lead through the well-warmed Miss himself, but then promptly let in two quick goals to change ends 2-1 down. We got it back to 2-2 thanks to a Steve the Film penalty, before succumbing to a late winner from the Hub. Eastleigh Hub 3 H&W WFT 2.

The 3-touch game turned out to be right up our street; we loved it. We scored a really well-worked opener when the Film, the Miss and Dave the Rave all formed a neat triangle down the Hub’s left side, leaving Pete the Fast unmarked in acres of space on our left; the Film swept the ball out to him, and the Fast finished clinically to the bottom corner. Even better was our second goal from a corner, with Stewart the Voice dragging two defenders with him to the near post, the Miss slid the ball to the unmarked Rob the Fit, who moved it instantly across the edge of the box to the Rave, who in turn slipped it to the Fast who was again unmarked and able to finish with aplomb for a second time. Derek the Wok in goal complained afterwards that he’d had a boring game with little to do. Shame. Eastleigh Hub 0 H&W WFT 2.

The final game, all-in and no subs, the larger pitch with full-size goals, was a step too far for us. The Hub ran out 4-1 winners (and in a couple of cases the ref did miss some sprinting in an otherwise very good refereeing performance), with our consolation goal coming from the Miss again following some good work down the left by the Rave and the Voice. Their first two goals were blinders into the top corner, giving the Wok no chance. Just when it looked like another was headed that way, the gazelle/salmon/flea* in goal leapt gracefully to his right to fingertip the ball around the post. Debate was immediately had on the touchline as to whether the Wok should be renamed “Darcy” – more after a well-known ballet dancer, rather than a rippling torso exiting a lake. Mention must be made of Mo the Polite, who has definitely been re-named as Mo the Assassin following his “robust” challenge on a Hub player in the first half. Eastleigh Hub 4 H&W WFT 1.

The full Many Shades squad was Rob Kelly, Stew Russell, Matt Bartolo, Steve Talman, Dave Veal, Pete Dolamore, Derek Trapp, and Mo Hill. Many thanks go to the injured pair of John “the Hat” Hicks and Paul “the Surf” Sealey (complete with Betty the Labradoodle, an unused substitute), along with Cathy “Statto” Mitchell, and Dave’s partner Sharron the Wag for coming along to support us.

Brighton & Hove Albion Tournament Results:

Hawks 0 Lancing 0
Hawks 0 Strood 1
Hawks 0 Worthing 2nd 0
Hawks 1 (Bartolo) Worthing 1st 1

3rd/4th Play-off
Hawks 0 Lancing 2

We arrived at the very impressive B&HA FC training complex in Lancing on a bright, sunny and warm morning. Sadly we had been reduced through no-shows and withdrawals to 10 players, meaning we could only include one team in the tournament instead of the planned two. As a group we need to address this, as both Sunday’s game against Eastleigh Hub and this tournament went the same way. If players tell us they are available to play, then it is only common courtesy that they should make the effort to turn up. This is especially important in what are “small-sided” games!

The performances weren’t completely negative, and on occasions our play was of a very good standard. Unfortunately due to the balance of the squad that did turn up we were blessed with much more in the way of defensive players than attacking, with the resultant lack of firepower to complement those strong passages of play. Thus it was that we managed only 1 goal. This wasn’t helped by our top scorer managing to get himself “substituted” for taking issue with the referee’s very lenient interpretation of Worthing 1st’s "alleged" running/walking style, and subsequently being excluded from our play-off game! Until the end of June, this remains the 2014-15 season for us, so for now we can perhaps rename him as “Nic Stock”, or maybe “Brian Ciardini”?

It is difficult to give any coherent match report, as the games tended to blend into each other after a while. However some notable events need to be recorded.

First of all was Dave the Limpet’s performance in goal in the opening game, when he kept no less than 8 attempts on goal at bay. Remarkably some of these were achieved in spite of his having dislocated two fingers at some point, resulting in his being banned from goalkeeping for the rest of the tournament! He did that “ice pack” thing, and bravely continued as an outfield player.

The rest of us couldn’t really lay claim to much in the way of glory or heroics, but Derek the Wok continued to elevate his reputation as a goalkeeper in our tense game against Worthing 1sts and we can now report that we have our first lady player to represent the club as Cathy Mitchell came on as a sub in two matches, her mission being to distract the goalkeepers. Unfortunately in the play-off game against Lancing it seemed that the sight of Cathy and Lancing’s female player both being on the pitch at the same time was too much for the tournament organiser, and while play was going on around them he insisted on having them pose together for a photo!

In no particular order, the full squad for the event was: Clive Wilkin (B&HA fan for 67 years, and in second heaven today!), Rob Kelly, Stew Russell, Matt Bartolo, Derek Trapp, Dave Hall, Dave Veal, Mo Hill, Cathy Mitchell, and Pete Dolamore. Many thanks again to John "the Hat" Hicks for coming along to support us.

Another matchday coming up:

The Many Shades will be taking on Pompey ICT at South Downs College on Thursday 4th June at 11.00.
Two squads will be selected from players who turn up, and after a warm-up will each play two 20-minute matches of 3-touch six-a-side (with rolling subs).

T' committee has generously decided that admission is free for spectators to this match  , but that usual session fees will apply to the players! :(

Final fixtures for season 2014-15

The Many Shades rounded off their inaugural season (seasons run 1st July to 30th June) with a friendly at home to Pompey ITC, who brought two teams along to South Downs College this morning to play us.

Today saw a debut for our new red shirts, white shorts and red socks outfit – very “England ‘66”! The others (the Blues) stuck to the navy and gold training gear we arrived in. Pompey wore their white shirts and maroon shorts, with a variety of socks.

Right, sartorial elegance out of the way, let’s get on with the footy!

A big thank you to two of the lads from Hawks in the Community, Chay Robinson and Josh Young, who came along to referee for us. The Special One helped them with interpretation of some of the more complex decisions, and after some teething problems with cries of “I wasn’t running!” and suchlike roaring across the pitch, things settled into a steady tempo. Running is the new offside.

In spite of the heat of the day, the Many Shades were slow to warm up for the first two matches, and we lost them both. The Blues went down 2-0 to Pompey A, and the Reds by 1-0 to Pompey B (who included yet another lady player - this is getting to be a theme across walking footy, anyone can play!). As part of our FA Licence, we keep records of certain incidents during the matches, and in those two games – only 12 minutes of football each – there were an astonishing 53 tackles/challenges made! And we were playing 3-touch, so weren’t dribbling with it.

After a short break, the Blues took on Pompey B, and gave them a bit of a thumping. Although only 1-0 at half-time, rather like Arsenal in the cup final, we turned it on in the second half and came away winners by 5-1. Goals came from Dave “SBD” Richards (2), Matt “the Miss” Bartolo (2), and new boy Derek “the Subtle” Jepson. Their goal came when Stewart “the Voice” Russell was checking with our stats-keeping students that they had got the 5th goal recorded. Concentrate on the game you plonker!

Meanwhile the Reds were making a good job of holding Pompey A to a creditable 0-0 draw. The game was marred by Derek “the Wok” Trapp getting injured when he collided with one of the Pompey players, collecting a bang on his head. Fortunately our new first aider Dave “the Limpet” Hall was on hand to try to give him the kiss of life; that got him moving pretty quickly. Derek had to miss the next game though, as he was still a little groggy. Paul “the Surf” Sealey stayed with him to make sure he was OK, as Paul himself was carrying a bit of a knock.

Finally the two Pompey teams played each other, where Pompey A beat Pompey B 1-0, but we weren’t interested in that as the Blues and Reds were facing off in yet another of our traditional blood-fests. It finished 0-0, and just for a change we played it as unlimited touch. Unfortunately some of our players (on both sides) are a bit hard of hearing, and also have memory issues. This meant that after about 5 minutes there were cries across the pitch of “four touches!” as some of the Blues blessed with slightly better memories and hearing moved the ball up the pitch. Four touches is the new offside.

Anyway, the Blues woz robbed as, vaguely reminiscent of Brazil’s disallowed goal in their 1978 World Cup match against Sweden, the final whistle blew just as Dave SBD’s shot hit the post – and crucially just before it subsequently rolled into the net. Half a second, that’s all it was.

The full squads were:
H&W Blues: Paul Sealey, John Hicks, Stew Russell, Rob Kelly, George De Ste Croix, Dave Richards, Matt Bartolo, Derek Jepson.
H&W Reds: Dave Hall, Mike Blakey, Baz Carter, Mo Hill, Joe Mair, John Morgan, Derek Trapp, Pete Dolamore.
Our next game is on Friday 3rd July at Goals (Eastern Road) 12.00 - 2.00ish, when we will be taking one team to the Portsmouth College 30th Anniversary Festival.

Appearances and Goals 2014-15 Season

As we play with "rolling substitutes", an appearance does not necessarily mean the player played throughout a complete game. Tournaments and festivals count as multiple appearances (e.g a maximum of 4 in the Spring Festival).

Here is the breakdown:

Matt Bartolo 21 appearances (9 goals)
Mike Blakey 3 (0)
Robbie Brown 10 (2)
Baz Carter 7 (0)
George De Ste Croix 7 (0)
Pete Dolamore 19 (2)
Barry Gray 7 (0)
Dave Hall 12 (0)
John Hicks 7 (0)
Mo Hill 18 (0)
Jeff Hooper 6 (0)
Derek Jepson 3 (1)
Tony Jewell 8 (0)

Many thanks to Chris for updating our bit on the OS.

Under the Community Team tab if you go to 50+ Latest News the Pompey ITC report is there, and just above the report is a link to a table of our 2014-15 fixtures, along with appearances and goals scored.

If any of our players need an alibi the evidence is there! :shh:
