Rich Bonsey Memorial Festival and Quiz Night

With Rich having arranged some time before for the quiz night to be held on 30th April, and with his having prepared the questions, it fell to his son Jamie Scott to give the go-ahead for this event at such short notice after Rich’s passing away.

The format was that teams would play a round-robin of short matches out on the pitch at West Leigh Park, and then retire to the lounge bar for a quiz. The whole thing was supposed to have been a fundraising event for the Many Shades of Grey, and Rich had planned for the winners of the quiz to get half of the entry fees, with the team retaining the other half.

On the afternoon and evening of 25th April, while sharing the news of Rich’s passing with the Many Shades, in amongst all of the emails, phone calls and text messages that Stew Russell was juggling was a call from the University of Southampton. It was their fundraising section, and as Stew had once (very briefly and in an extremely part-time sort of way) been registered as a student there, he was on their database.

They wanted to talk about setting up a new project researching into using the body’s immune system to defeat cancer as it began to form, rather than trying to treat it once it had hold. Why on earth was such a phone call being made on this evening of all evenings? It seemed more than coincidental. Check the website, is it genuine? http://www.southampton.ac.uk/youreit Yes, it is. Needless to say the Many Shades took this as a sign. We would raise money for research into Cancer Immunology.

The event was re-jigged at short notice, and we had players from Pompey ITC, Emsworth & Hayling, Mountbatten WFT, and Havant Taxi Drivers all wanting to play. The Many Shades put out two sides, one a Team Bonsey side made up of people who had been more closely involved with Rich (with an underage player called Shaun Gale) as well as a Many Shades of Grey side. We set up a small pitch with big goals to give us more chance of scoring, and got on with it in the typical bank holiday Sunday evening’s pouring rain.

Before the matches began, we held a minute's applause for Rich. Once the games got under way, the festival was officially won by a team from Pompey ITC, although there was such a mixture of players from different teams playing for most of the teams that really it didn’t seem to matter who had come out on top, and it is impossible to make it part of the official appearances/goals record for the Many Shades. We have to say a huge thank you to the Hawks not only for letting us use the pitch, but also the changing facilities afterwards so that showered and preened players were able to emerge into the bar for the quiz night.

With James McIlwaine running the raffle, Shaun Gale running the auction, then Stew Russell reading out Rich Bonsey’s quiz questions, the evening went on to raise an impressive £638.87 towards the Cancer Immunology research project at the University of Southampton.

There was a moment of controversy though, when the winning quiz team, the Many Shades of Ginger, had a player red-carded for having a smartphone on the table. Clearly, allowing himself to be caught like that, it was smarter than he was! Controversy was nipped in the bud though, when the winners generously returned their winnings to the overall pot. And quite right too.
