Welcome all to the latest instalment of the HAWKS over 50’s walking football update.
First, the news. Pressure has been building on the ‘South Coast Special One’ in the transfer window, inundated with yet more transfer requests for the ‘Fabulous Fourteen’, obscene figures have been bandied about (no not you Derek), yet still Galsey stands strong.
At long last the ‘Friendly’ with Eastleigh a date has been set, but the crafty beasts are trying to change the timings to a 2-30pm kick off from the original 11.00am, as I’m sure you’re all aware at our age an afternoon nap is vital so the time has to be changed.
Westleigh Park update, both ‘The Special One’ and ‘Lord Bradders’ endured a 3 mile run today, we were all very impressed with their fitness commitment, it actually turns out they were being chased by the ‘Style Police’, whilst on the subject of style, we have to mention Adi Aymes who shall be named Adi the eloquent, so reminiscent of Leslie Philips……Ding Dong
To the astro, today we were 14, we miss John the Nipper struggling with an injury, Dave the Rave moving house and Chris the Late to be known as Chris the Very Late, we welcome Mo to be known as Mo the Polite.
A sigh of relief echoed around Southdowns arena as Galesy took the warm up rather than Joe the Mighty……..Phew
We started with a relatively tame passing exercise which when footballs and directions were introduced mutated into a complex fiasco, enough of that…to the match
A beautiful sunny and slightly crisp morning welcomed our match, where the atmosphere held a somewhat electric charge, the eager anticipation of the squad all attempting to better themselves could be sensed. The vivacious 7 Vivids v the 7 Bubbly Blues, 30 minutes of frenetic action to decide this week’s victors.
Once again a very tight match ensued with all players finding their positions and committing to the ball, decent foot to foot passing throughout and good build up play, this made for a quality match with the final score 2 all.
With oodles of skill from all this week I must start with The Wok hard work, determination…….a joy to behold, Stewart the Voice controlling from defence and so quick to the ball, George the Safe creative inventive football and a sparkling spell between the sticks, The Yeti resourceful original football. Our very own colossus, which is Joe the Mighty, back on form with an outstanding display and a back flick wonder goal. Dave SBD crucial in any team and another cracking goal. Paul the Anxious monumental presence in centre midfield, Rob the Fit safe in defence, agile and innovative. Mo the Polite ( named after being head-butted without retaliation) fitted in very well with some worthy skills on display, Clive the Nimble was EVERYWHERE a player of note. Matt the Miss, still searching for that ‘Je ne sais quoi’, so keeps his name. Tony the Wall brilliant, in goal and a power on the pitch, nice goal Tony. Jeff the Influential always a threat in that central role, a real intimidator. Last but by no means least the incredible defence of Pete the Fast brave and strong.
Today’s performance agreed by all and seconded by Galesy was our best performance to date.
Finally, could I ask my fellow athletes to suggest an anthem that represents our incredible team. This will be played at the start of all training sessions, matches and tournaments. Maybe ‘Help the Aged’ by Pulp, or to be more serious perhaps ‘Seven Nation Army’ The White Stripes.
With track suits imminent Paul the Anxious entered into a deep and meaningful discussion with the kit supplier and the hierarchy at WLP, the outcome is still unsure.
With a March tournament looming, we will be working on a few set pieces next week. these to include 'How to take out a scummer' first class referee abuse and 'trash the clubhouse' So for any comedy enthusiasts come on down
And as always, thank you to all my fellow athletes for a great couple of hours to the ‘Special One’ for his patience and comedy with us all
